Amalgam used to fill the cavities is lethal

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that, amalgam, used by Sri Lankan dentists to fill the cavities, causes a number of deadly diseases, chronic nerve diseases, cancers and kidney disease.

Executive Director of the Environment Environmental Center Hemantha Vithanage says according to a latest report of the World Health Organization, children and pregnant mothers are most at risk.

Vithanage was speaking at a press conference held at the 'Environment Justice Center' in Rajagiriya yesterday.

Vithanage stated that Sri Lanka even has signed Minamata Convention on Mercury to refrain from using harmful substances like mercury.

He further stated that, although Sri Lanka is expected to withdraw from using mercury by next year, importation mercury still happens.
