Presidential candidate- ‘No decision yet’ –says Mahinda: Gota overseas Featured

Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa has said that so far there is no decision regarding the nomination of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as the presidential candidate.

He had made this statement during a media briefing held at his office yesterday (26) with Editors and media heads.

“We had a small family function, but we did not talk about the presidential candidate. After all it’s normal for families to get together. This is the biggest allegation against me about my ‘brothers group’. Now Chamal Rajapaksa is the head of the family and we call him.

Gotabhaya had not decided about coming, but Basil said he would come, Chamal said he would come. There are various stories about all our family members.

Basil of course said he was not coming, but said he was still searching for a winning candidate,” he said during the briefing.

‘Planted story’!

However, despite Mahinda Rajapaksa’s claims, several newspapers had reported that the Rajapaksa brothers had met at the Opposition Leader’s Wijerama residence on March 14 and they had taken a decision to field Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as the Presidential candidate.

But, when Sri Lanka Mirror made an inquiry regarding this news, an SLPP leader said that so far no such decision had been taken. He said this news story was a ‘plant’ by the Gota loyalists.

However, this source added that there had been a celebration held at Chamal Rajapaksa’s son Shamindra Rajapaksa’s house on March 14 and all the Rajapaksa family members were invited. But while the party had gone on from around 7.30 to around 11.00pm during that time no discussion had taken place between the Rajapaksa brothers regarding who the presidential candidate would be.

Gota off to America!

Meanwhile, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had departed from Sri Lanka this morning, together with his wife to participate in a wedding ceremony in Los Angelis. However, he is expected to meet with US officials regarding the speeding up of the denouncing of his US citizenship.

The Sunday Times newspaper reported that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had handed over an application to the US Embassy in Colombo for the denouncing of his US citizenship on March 06th.
