Easter Sunday attacks: 8 police chiefs transferred

The National Police Commission (NPC) yesterday (25) transferred eight high ranking Police officers on the grounds that they were unable to ensure national security to prevent religious extremist attacks on churches and hotels.

Accordingly, Senior DIG Western Province Nandana Munasinghe has been transferred as the Police Chief of the North-western Province. Senior DIG of North-western Province, Jagath Abeysiri Gunawardena has been appointed as the Police Chief of the Western Province.

In addition, DIG Colombo Lalith Pathinayake has been transferred to the Police Headquarters. DIG Priyantha Weerasuriya who was serving at the Police Headquarters has been appointed as the DIG in Colombo.

DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon of the Gampaha District has been transferred to Puttalam District. Champika Siriwardena who was in charge of Puttalam District has been appointed as the Chief of Police in the Gampaha District.

SSP Upali Jayasinghe, who was in charge of the Colombo Central Division has been transferred to the Elpitiya Division while Elpitiya SP Nihal Thalduwa has been appointed as the Chief of Colombo Central Division.

SSP Chandana Athukorala of Negombo Division has been transferred to Trincomalee and Kapila Kadupitiya, who served as the police chief in Trincomalee, has been transferred to Negombo.

SP Sanjeewa Bandara of the Colombo North police division has been transferred to the Seethawaka Police Division and SP Upali Chandana has been appointed as the Chief of Colombo North Police Division.

The National Police Commission said that a group of policemen were transferred as they did not meet the requirement of national security.
