No need to make Maithri president again - Rajitha Featured

There will be no more presidential elections as we are against the executive presidency and the position will be abolished as promised to the people, and therefore, no need arises to name incumbent Maithripala Sirisena as the presidential candidate, says cabinet spokesman Dr. Rajitha Senaratne.

Speaking at the cabinet news briefing yesterday (11), he said the government as well as president Sirisena intended to do away with the executive presidency and go for a new constitution.

What some in the SLFP are saying is irrelevant, he insisted, adding that no presidential election would take place in 2020.

The proposed constitution cannot be compared to the one formulated during the Chandrika Kumaratunga regime for a system that went beyond federalism, as it would devolve powers within a unitary state, Senaratne also said.

He said he had opposed a proposal by the then minister G.L. Peiris to extend the president’s term of office by another two years.

However, SLFP minister Sarath Amunugama has said his party’s central committee has decided to continue with the executive presidency and to name the incumbent as its 2020 candidate.
