Cabinet approval for provision of TABs disregarding President’s objection Featured

Cabinet approval has been granted for the purchase of 183,000 Tabs for A/L students of state universities disregarding the objection raised by the President, it is reported.

Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam had submitted the proposal at the Cabinet meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday (07).

Government sources stated that the allocation made for this project is Rs. 3,500 million.

At the time the proposal was made, President Sirisena had raised objections and added that previously approval had been given for the provision of free Tabs as a pilot project.

He had also noted that for such a pilot project, 183,000 Tabs was not required. 

However, in response Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam had said that all arrangements had been made for the implementation of this project.

Thereafter, the Cabinet approval had been granted disregarding the President’s objection.
