Recommendations for suspension of saree rule

The Human Rights Council has notified the State Administration and Disaster Management Ministry to immediately suspend the circular issued, making it compulsory for all female employees to report for work clad in saree or osari.

The HRC had issued this order to suspend the circular based on the grounds that women wear various attire based on their particular preference and ethnic background.

They had notified the ministry that such an order is a violation of the rights of the female employees and is also against the constitution of the country.

Issuing a circular recently, the State Administration and Disaster Management Ministry Secretary J.J. Ratnasiri had made it compulsory for female employees to come dressed in saree or osari and males to report to work clad in shirt and trouser or the national dress.
