It is stated that a special Working Committee meeting will be held in the next few weeks to get the proposal approved.
It also reported that there is a plan to expand the membership of the United National Front Alliance by naming it as Democratic Alliance.
The alliance is to be officially launched on 5 August.
It is reported that minority parties as well as the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) are to be invited to join this front.
It is said that a number of civil society organizations including Movement for a Just Society are also to be invited to join this alliance.
However, it is said that the majority of UNP low ranked MPs are demanding that presidential candidature should be given to deputy leader of the party Sajith Premadasa.
Even though Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has been nominated as the presidential candidate of the Sri Lanka People's Front, it is difficult to actively use him for his election campaign, internal sources of the party say.
It is because he has had a heart surgery. It is said that he had undergone the surgery last June and has been instructed to even sleep in one posture.
It is reported that he has been prohibited from speaking at length on medical advice and that if he becomes the presidential candidate, he will address the public through a video for most meetings except for a few key meetings.
Meanwhile, weekend newspaper 'Anidda' reports that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa's name has not been included in the report prepared by the US Internal Revenue Service for the April-June quarter, which included the names of citizens who had withdrawn American citizenship. However, former Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has withdrawn his American citizenship.
While Aluthgamage is making such statements,Lanka Lead News website maintained by Wimal Weerawansa in an article titled " Future of Gota" has stated that Dr. Nalin de Silva, who was leading the campaign to make Gotabhaya the presidential candidate has suggested the leaders of Sri Lanka People's Front that they should look into another presidential candidates rather than just Gotabhaya.
