He said this in response to a matter raised by JVP-MP Vijitha Herath stating that it has been made possible for such garbage to be brought to the country as a result of the amendments made to the Finance Act during
the period Mahinda Rajapaksa was the Finance Minister.
Herath said that this has paved the way for the containers of garbage to be brought to Katunayake.
Meanwhile, the Customs Department said that investigations regarding the imported containers of garbage is still underway.
However, addressing a media briefing yesterday, Hayleys Free Zone General Manager Ruwan Waidyaratne said that the 130 containers stored at their premises does not contain garbage but used mattresses.
He further stated that the 130 container loads of used mattresses were imported by Ceylon Metal Processing Corporation (Pvt) Limited which was the actual owner of the cargo and it is stored at the Hayleys Free Zone yard as the re-exporting company ETL Colombo had selected Hayleys for the re-exporting of these containers.
