Speaker: committed to a Righteous Society

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday pledged his unwavering commitment to build a righteous society as entrusted upon him by the religious leadership.

The Speaker was making the thanks giving speech at ‘Yathindra Puja’ ceremony organized by the Citizens’ Organizations’ Collective (‘Purawasi Sanvidana Ekamuthuwa’) at BMICH yesterday to pay homage to the Maha Sanga
for coming forward to confer honorary titles to the Speaker in recognition of his service to the country.

Mahanayake and Anu Nayake Theras representing the Malwathu, Asgiri, Amarapura and Ramanna Nikayas presided at the event and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga,
ministers, MPs, professionals, public officials and academia attended the ceremony.

“Today, we live in a society that lacks morals and discipline. People are not law abiding and have failed to understand their responsibilities, duties and rights. Ethnic and religious divisions are taking shape. I leave the BMICH premises today with sheer determination that I will commit myself to the confidence placed upon me by the religious fraternity to right these wrongs of the contemporary society,” the Speaker said.

“The country has missed many of its long term national aspirations and opportunities as the focus had been on short term motives. We must put an end to this. The country’s glorious past must be revived and the youth is
important in this mission. Education and job creation must be our focus to make the youth prosper,” he remarked.

The Speaker, at the outset of his speech, promised the gathering that he would always live by the true meaning of those honorary titles conferred on him. Speaker Jayasuriya received ‘Sri Lankabhimani Shasana Keerthi’ honorary title from Siyam Nikaya, ‘Sadhujana Prasadini Lanka Putra’ honorary title from Amarapuara Sanga Council and ‘Sarartha Dharshi Jananayake’ and ‘Vishwakeerthi Sri Lanka Janaranjana’ honorary titles from Ramanna nikaya in 2019.

“I can be happy that I practiced politics sans of posters, banners and polythene. It was also free of character assassination, hatred and malice. The success of my personal life was because I always acted according to my conscience without harassing anybody. I earnestly hope that the political culture in the country will change for the better to continue to with these policies of mine,” he added.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe presented a memento to Malwathu Chapter Anunayake Ven Divulkumbure Sri Vimaladharma Thera, former President Kumaratunga presented a memento to Asgiriya Chapter Anunayake Ven.
Vendaruwe Upali Thera, Buddha Sasana Minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera presented a memento to Amarapuara Chapter Mahanayake Ven. Kotugoda Dhammavasa Thera and the event’s Organizing Committee headed by Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne presented a memento to Ramanna Chapter Mahanayake Most. Ven. Napana Premasiri Thera during the event.

Speaker Jayasuriya had not taken any of the six vehicle permits he was entitled to during his Parliamentary service and he donates his Parliament salary to a charity fund.
