Meeting at Temple Trees: Signatures forcibly obtained for Sajith’s petition

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had summoned the UNP Senior Ministers to Temple Trees for an urgent meeting today (06).

During this meeting they are also scheduled to discuss about the Presidential election.

Meanwhile, several UNP backbenchers had complained to Ranil Wickremesinghe that several Non-Cabinet Ministers had been forcibly trying to obtain the signatures of the UNP-MPs for a petition urging the party leadership to
appoint Sajith Premadasa as the presidential candidate.

The Prime Minister who was on a tour to the Maldives, had been notified regarding this incident by phone.

They had complained to Wickremesinghe that these non-cabinet ministers were threatening them and trying to force them to sign the petition.

They had claimed that they would have Sajith Premadasa nominated as the Presidential candidate and have him win the election and once he becomes the President, he would automatically gain party leadership.

They had threatened the MPs that if they do not sign the petition, they could forget about any hopes of receiving nominations at the next general election, if they do not support Sajith Premadasa.

Hence, Ranil Wickremesinghe had said that he intends to take stern disciplinary action against these MPs who are threatening the party members and trying to obtain their signatures.
