Pakistan impose tax on betel export Featured

Pakistan, a leading buyer of betel exports from Sri Lanka, has imposed a tax on betel exportation causing export revenue to fall, reports say.

This has directly affected the economy of around 20,000 betel farmers.

According to reports most of them are farmers in the Kurunegala District.

The export revenue of betel in 2017 amounted to Rs 3,164 million and it has declined by 2018 to Rs 2,215 million.

The price of betel has come down since the end of 2017.

The betel farmers say that one of our most valuable assets, the national cricket team, is getting ready to take part in a tournament in Pakistan taking a risk and they request the authorities to use this opportunity to solve the issue.
