Drought affects over 700,000 in 18 districts Featured

Except for the Western Province, 18 districts in the rest of the eight provinces has been battered by severe drought with 778,474 persons belonging to 230,578 families being affected, according to the Disaster Management Centre.

Those affected are from Ratnapura, Puttalam, Kurunegala, Jaffna, Mannar, Killinochchi, Mulaithivu, Matale, Kandy, Hambantota, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Ampara, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Monaragala and Badulla districts.

In Puttalam the number of persons affected by the drought stands at 54,160, Kurunegala 45,496, in Mannar 63,115, in Mulaithivu 61,154, Matale 46,800, Ampara 66,334 and Batticaloa 86,635.

Currently the Disaster Management Centre is providing those affected with drinking water and other essentials.
