Appeal against 'Sil' material court ruling to be heard on March 13

The appeal filed against a court ruling on a misappropriation case worth Rs 600 million during the previous presidential election has been fixed for support on March 13 next year by the Appeal Court.
Former President's Secretary Lalith Weeratunge and former Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) Director General Anusha Palpita had filed the petition after they were found guilty over the fraud.

They appealed against the court ruling by claiming High Court Judge Gihan Kulatunga's verdict to be erroneous.

The suspects had been accused of using TRC funds worth Rs 600 million to purchase 'sil' material during the previous elections.

Accordingly, they were sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment by the Colombo High Court. They were instructed to pay a fine of Rs 2 million and a sum of Rs 50 million each to the TRC.

The appeal is being heard before Justices Deepali Wijesundera and Achala Wengappuli.
