16 FD accounts of Keheliya’s family members frozen

Colombo, July 04 (Daily Mirror) –  On an application made by the Bribery Commission, the Colombo High Court issued an order to freeze 16 fixed deposit accounts and three insurance policies belonging to the family members of former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella. 

The value of the frozen fixed deposit accounts and insurance policies has been estimated at Rs. 93.125 million.

Accordingly, 16 fixed deposit accounts and three insurance policies belonging to Keheliya’s spouse, three daughters and son-in-law have been frozen for a period of seven days.

Former Health Minister Rambukwella is currently held in remand custody in connection with the alleged purchase of substandard immunoglobulin injections. 

This freezing order was obtained by the Bribery Commission in terms of Section 53(1) of the Anti-Corruption Act No. 09 of 2023, as part of the in

vestigation being conducted under Section 42, where the spouse, family members or any other persons are also subject to scrutiny.

Fmr. PMD DG threatens photographer

An investigation has been launched after a photographer of the Presidential Media Division (PMD) has lodged a complaint that he had received death threats over the phone by a former Director General of the PMD.

According to the complaint, he had been threatened on Nov. 11.

Several items of the PMD, including a drone camera, were found missing during a search conducted at the division’s facilities after President Anura Kumara Dissanayake assumed office. An internal audit has also been initiated to investigate the matter.

Claiming he was aware that the photographer had been providing information regarding the missing equipment, the former PMD DG had allegedly threatened the former.

Kahathuduwa police is conducting further investigations.

Met. Dept. warns of heavy rain tomorrow

The Department of Meteorology warns of heavy thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon and night (Nov. 14) in several areas due to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.

The Department of Meteorology warns of heavy thundershowers exceeding 100mm after 2 pm tomorrow, especially in the provinces of Central, Uva, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern Provinces as well as in the Kalutara area.

With the General Election to be held tomorrow, the public is advised to visit polling stations early in the day, before the adverse weather.

Foreigner arrested at BIA with cocaine in stomach

The officers attached to the Narcotic Control unit at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake have arrested a passenger yesterday morning (Nov. 11) on suspicion of trafficking narcotic substances.

He had arrived from Sierra Leone via Istanbul by the Turkish Airlines flight TK 730.

After being put through a body scanner, it was revealed that the suspect had concealed drugs in his person.

Subsequently, the suspect was admitted to the Negombo Hospital and 17 pellets suspected of containing narcotics have been retrieved. However, the suspect had confessed that there are more pellets in his stomach.

The retrieved pellets and the suspect were handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigations.

According to Sri Lanka Customs, the estimated street value of the seized cocaine pellets is around Rs. 13 million,
