Election Commissioner’s request to President unlikely to materialise Featured

As the Provincial Council elections are expected to be held after the General elections, presentation of the provincial council election bill is expected to be delayed.

A bill approving the previously followed provincial council system, is scheduled to be passed, and prior to dissolving parliament in March if this bill is passed, the provincial council elections would have to be held prior to the General elections. Therefore, it is expected that this bill would not be passed any time soon.

The issue in holding the relevant election is that the delimitation report for the current electoral system has not been passed in parliament.

However, at the time current President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa was proclaimed president, Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya publicly made a request to hold the disappeared provincial council election as soon as possible.
