Commission has no right to give orders, AG notifies! Featured

The Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) appointed to look into alleged political victimization of public servants has no right to give orders to halt the investigations on Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda and Rear Admiral D.K.P. Dassanayake, said Attorney General (AG) Dappula De Livera.

The AG has told the commission it has no legal powers to instruct the AG on cases before court, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said.

The Presidential Commission inquiring into incidents of alleged political victimization has issued an order preventing the Permanent High Court at bar from proceeding the case filed against the former Commander of the Navy, Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda and former Navy Spokesperson Rear Admiral DKP Dassanayake, on the 27th.

Orders were issued having considered the complaints

Issuing a communiqué the Presidential Commission said it has given due attention to the complaint that the legal action has been filed against the officers based on political pressure.

The PCoI has advised that the cases be put on hold until investigations being conducted by the commission concludes.

Therefore, the Presidential Commission has ordered the Attorney General to halt the proceedings by the Attorney General’s Department over the legal proceedings filed against Wasantha Karannagoda and D.K.P. Dissanayake until the commission concludes their inquiry and present recommendations to the President.
