UNP elephant-swan decision tomorrow : Mahinda-Maithri to meet today Featured

The decision on which symbol the Samagi Janabalawegaya would contest under would be taken tomorrow (19), according to the UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.

He said this decision is scheduled to be taken at the UNP Working Committee meeting tomorrow.

Meanwhile, addressing a media briefing in Matara recently, the UNP former General Secretary Tissa Attanayake expressed confidence that all the issues facing the UNP would be resolved at the working committee meeting.

He said the majority of the party members are of the view that if there is a problem in contesting under the elephant symbol, then the party should opt for the swan symbol, adding that as the election decision is due in two weeks, this issue needs to be resolved soon.

He noted that the new government had come under public discontentment within a short time of coming into power.

Mahinda-Maithri meeting today

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and former President Maithripala Sirisena are scheduled to meet in Colombo today to discuss the future activities of the Sri Lanka Nidahas Podu Jana Sandhanaya (ශ්‍රී ලංකා නිදහස් පොදුජන සන්ධානය ).

It is also reported that the General Secretary of the SLFP Dayasiri Jayasekara, Senior Deputy Chairman Nimal Siripala de Silva and Mahinda Amaraweera would also join the discussion representing the SLFP.

Basil Rajapaksa and Minister Dallas Alahapperuma would join the discussion representing the SLPP.

A senior SLPP member told Sri Lanka Mirror that this meeting had been scheduled on the request of the SLFP to iron out several issues that had arisen in contesting as a coalition.

It was decided upon yesterday to appoint Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Leader of the Sri Lanka Nidahas Podu Jana Sandhanaya and former President Maithripala Sirisena be appointed as its Chairman.
