JVP, TNA, SLMC & civil orgs to form coalition Featured

Several political parties including the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and civil society organisations are planning on forming a broad joint coalition, said Muslim Congress Leader Rauff Hakeem.

Hakeem said this during the Sri Lanka  Muslim 29th General Assembly held at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Auditorium in Polgolla, Kandy yesterday (23).

He said that based on the primary intention of preserving democracy and several other factors, this broad coalition would soon be formed.

Can't compare prez poll victory to gen. election - Hakeem

“There is a notion that when a general election is held within a short period of having held the presidential election, the party to which the person who won the presidential election belongs to has greater advantage. However, under the proportional voting system it is incorrect to calculate the number of seats based on the presidential election results,” he said.

Hakeem noted that the government is of the view that due to the current malady within the UNP, they could achieve a resounding victory at the upcoming general election.
