Speaking at the UNP party headquarters Sirikotha, Former Parliamentarian Abeywardena said the party is continuing to work to unit all factions ahead of the General Election.
From a legal standpoint he pointed out that according to the party constitution members who join another political party will lose the membership and all posts.
Former Minister Abeywardena revealed that the UNP were silent during the past few days because party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe advised them to avoid conflicts to ensure unity within the party.
Abeywardena added that Ranil Wickremesinghe also directed them to work in unity and try to convince people with different opinions to move forward with the UNP.
The former Minister stressed that the party will take steps to mitigate issues if people see their silence as a weakness and take advantage of that.
He requested the public and the youth to not vote for a political party that is not abiding the law, that cannot obey a constitution, and are not disciplined.
