Serious shortage of blood at blood bank

The national blood bank is facing a serious shortage of blood, says Dr. Lakshman Edirisinghe - Director at the National Blood Transfusion Service of Sri Lanka.

The shortage has occurred after blood donation camps have been suspended over the Covid-19 spread.

Although there are stocks sufficient for two weeks, meeting the daily requirement would definitely become an issue by next week, he says.

He said that steps have been taken to collect blood at the Blood Bank in Narahenpita or at Base and Teaching hospitals around the country.

However, he said that individuals from who blood will be collected will be carefully screened and must meet strict conditions.

Edirisinghe urged the public to contact 0115 332153 or 0115 332154 to make an appointment to donate blood.
