Fish stocks stuck at habours ; minister unresponsive

After islandwide curfew was imposed over the prevailing health situation, a large stock of fish caught by fishermen are remaining unsold at harbours, Director of the National Fisheries Federation - D. Dayananda Silva says.

He says that the fish, worth millions of rupees will be spoilt in a few days and will have to be dumped into the sea, and this would greatly impact the financial situation of the fishermen, he added.
Mr. Silva also urges the fisheries community to be provided facilities provided for the transportation of other food stocks and essential items.

If not, the fisheries community will have to face grave financial difficulties, he add.

He also said some fishermen had arrived after months at sea and are unable to return to their homes due to curfew. He urged for a solution with regard to this.

Attempts to contact the minister of fisheries to inform about these grievances have been futile since the minister had remained uncontactable so far, Mr. Silva said, adding that this had made the fisheries community feel quite helpless.

He urges the president and the prime minister to look into this grave matter and provide a speedy solution to the fisheries community.
