CC to meet at Speaker's residence tomorrow

A special meeting of the Constitutional Council will be held tomorrow (11th) at 4.30 pm at the Speaker's residence, reports say.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, party leaders and other members will participating in the meeting, which will be chaired by former speaker Karu Jayasuriya, who heads the body.

The Constitutional Council is empowered to take necessary state decisions even in the event of the dissolution of the House for a General Election.

'Won't expect any privileges'

Meanwhile, Mr. Jayasuriya's media unit states that the former Speaker had returned all official vehicles, office space and quarters provided to him, soon after parliament was dissolved.

The statement issued by Mr. Jayasuriya's media unit adds that the former Speaker will in no way expect any privileges said to be granted according to a Cabinet paper tabled in March. The Cabinet paper has reportedly made it possible for ministers and state ministers to use their official vehicles and quarters until the General election ends and even the former Speaker was entitled to these privileges.
