President Gotabaya celebrates 71

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa celebrates his 71st birthday today (June 20).

Born on June 20, 1949, in Palatuwa in the district of Matara, Gotabaya Rajapaksa is a student of Ananda College, Colombo.

He joined the Sri Lanka Army on April 26, 1971 as a cadet and commenced duties as a Second Lieutenant on May 25, 1972.

He has been a Second Commanding Officer attached to the Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, Rajarata Rifles, Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment and 1st Gajaba Regiment.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa is an Army officer who has been awarded Ranavikrama and Ranashura during his 21 years of service.

Lieutenant Colonel Gotabaya Rajapaksa has contributed to the success of a number of military operations including Vadamarachchi Operation, Operation Strike Hard and Tri-Forces Operation.
Lieutenant Colonel Gotabaya, who was appointed Commander of the Kotalawala Defense University in 1992, migrated to Los Angeles, USA, as an IT professional after completing 21 years of military service.

He joined forces with his brother, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in 2009 as the Defense Secretaryto defeat 30 years of terrorism tormenting the nation.

He was elected as the 7th Executive President of the country, winning the confidence of the majority of the people at the Presidential Election held on November 16, 2019.
