Sanga gives statement for nearly 10 hrs ; Mahela summoned tomorrow

Former Sri Lankan Cricket Captain Kumar Sangakkara provided a statement to the ‘Special Investigation Unit on Prevention of Offenses Relating to Sports’ for almost 10 hours today (02).

He was summoned before the unit with regard to the 2011 Cricket World Cup Final fixing claims, made by ex-sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage.

Speaking to reporters after giving the statement, Sangakkara said he believed that the truth about this issue will be revealed once the probe is concluded.

Responding to questions of the media, he further said that he had no intention of vying for the post of ICC chairmanship.

Sangakkara added that even if he did get the opportunity, he has other responsibilities he needs to attend to, at the present.

Mahela tomorrow

Former Sri Lanka cricketing legend Mahela Jayawardena has been summoned before the Special Investigation Division of the Ministry of Sports at 9am tomorrow.
The unit has so far recorded statements from former chief of Selectors - Aravinda De Silva and Cricketer Upul Tharanga.

Summoning Sangakkara and Mahela, who are among two of the greatest cricketing legends and highly respected Sri Lankan icons, have sparked outrage among netizens and cricket fans.

They have been exclaiming their utter disgust against Mahindananda Aluthgamage as well as former chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket - Thilanga Sumathipala over their involvement in the issue.

Both are contesting the upcoming General election under the ticket of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.

Meanwhile, Mahindananda opened his election office in Harispattuwa today.
