2020 Gen. election : Overall voter turnout, 70%

The overall voter turnout of the 2020 General election is around 70, says chairman of the Election Commission - Mahinda Deshapriya.

He said thus after addressing a media briefing at the National Election Commission after voting ended today.

This voter turnout is the third lowest recorded in the 09 general elections held since 1977.

The voter turnout during this period is as follows : 1977 - 86.69*%, 1989 - 63.60%, 1994 - 76.24%, 2000 - 75.62%, 2001 - 76.03%, 2004 - 75.95*%, 2010 - 61.26% හා 2015 - 77.66%.

The voter turnout at today's polls were as follows :

Batticaloa – 76%
Nuwara Eliya –75%
Monaragala – 75%
Badulla 74%
Vanni – 73%
Trincomalee – 73%
Digamadulla – 73%
Matale – 72%
Polonnaruwa – 72%
Kandy – 72%
Ratnapura – 71%
Anuradhapura – 70%
Kegalle – 70%
Colombo – 70%
Kalutara – 70%
Galle – 70%
Matara – 71%
Gampaha – 68%
Kurunegala – 65%
Jaffna – 67%
Puttalam – 64%
