4 nabbed for smuggling Turmeric

The Sri Lanka Navy has arrested four persons for smuggling over 6,300 kilograms of turmeric to Sri Lanka, from India.

The Navy said upon detection of a suspicious trawler in seas off the Chilaw Point, four suspects aboard were apprehended, along with sacks stuffed with turmeric.

The consignment, measured at around 6,381kgs in weight, was handed over to the Sri Lanka Customs for investigations.

On the assumption that the four suspects had close association with Indian smugglers at sea, the four individuals together with their family members were directed to quarantine, following the directives of health authorities.

Meanwhile, based on information revealed by the suspects in question, the Navy in coordination with the Sri Lanka Coast Guard and Chilaw Police had carried-out another raid in the Chilaw town and nabbed nine more individuals, who are believed be prospective dealers in connection to the same incident.

A minivan and Rs. 2,242,500 in their possession were also seized during the raid.

The detainees were produced before the Chilaw Police for further legal action.
