Minister of Plantation and Rural Infrastructure Samantha Vidyaratna said that two well-known politicians are allegedly behind an incident involving illegal sand mining.
Speaking in Parliament today (Jan. 21), he said, “In the area reportedly belonging to the Chilaw Sand Company, sand has been excavated beyond the permitted amount. This has led to reports of a massive fraud. Currently, investigations are underway, and preliminary findings indicate that a fraudulent transaction amounting to approximately Rs. 400 million has taken place.
The Minister said that although it is difficult to identify the respondent ultimately responsible for this fraud, reports have emerged linking two prominent politicians and several contractors to the incident.
