Congestion at port due to Covid-19 : ships anchored away from port Featured

Port sources say that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, nearly 50,000 container boxes have been piled up in the Colombo port.

It is also said that about 14 ships have been anchored outside the port for several days.

It is reported that due to this situation import and export activities have also been disrupted.

It is said that the shortage of port employees is due to the fact that a group of employees at the port have been infected with the Covid-19 virus, which has led to the quarantine of others and the inability to bring in workers from isolated areas.

Due to this, it is rumored that the Sri Lanka Ports Authority has decided to seek the assistance of retired employees.

Containers shipped to Sri Lanka unloaded in India

According to media reports, some of the containers have been unloaded at ports in India and Singapore.

Retired General Daya Ratnayake, Chairman of the Ports Authority, told the media that the reason for this was not the issue of release from the port but the inability of their owners to collect due to the curfew imposed by the government.

He has further stated that the release of the containers is being carried out as usual.
