Foreign judges will not be accepted - president Featured

President Maithripala Sirisena says the government has been able to settle the dispute over the matter of participation of foreign judges in an internal investigation mechanism.

Speaking at the opening of the new courts complex in Polonnaruwa, he said he has told all visiting heads of states and the UN secretary-general that foreign judges would not be welcome.

The law does not permit foreign judges’ participation either, and a constitutional amendment would be required to do otherwise, he said.

The government places trust in knowledge, intelligence and experiences of its judiciary and the judges, said the president.
