GMOA supports reopening of schools

The Government Medical Officers Association says parents, health units and education officials must contribute equally and fulfil their responsibilities in order to ensure the schools system can be maintained continuously.

Editor of the GMOA Dr. Haritha Aluthge addressing a media briefing said schools cannot be closed continuously amidst the coronavirus.

Dr. Haritha Aluthge said schools cannot remain closed forever, as even the World Health Organisation has said the world may have to live with the virus for years. Therefore, he stressed there is no issue with reopening schools in areas that are not deemed high risk for the spread of the virus.

However, Dr. Haritha Aluthge noted parents bear responsibility in this regard and must not send their children to schools if they are from a place under lockdown, while also noting it is the responsibility of authorities to ensure that all facilities and good practices are in place to ensure health safety measures are strictly followed. He also stressed that it is the responsibility of health authorities to monitor whether all such measures are being followed strictly.
