Schools closed as SL braces itself for Cyclone Burevi

Cyclone Burevi is expected to make landfall in Sri Lanka's East Coast between 07pm - 10pm today (02), the Meteorology Department states.


As the nation braces itself for the cyclone, the Government has instructed the relevant authorities to move the fishing community in the east and people living in areas prone to floods to safe locations.

Speaking in parliament today (02), State Minister of National Security, Home Affairs and Disaster Management Chamal Rajapaksa said that financial allocations to the tune of Rs. 01 Million will be given to the District Secretaries to provide food and water to the people evacuated from high-risk zones.

Search and Rescue personnel from the armed forces are on alert and stand-by to be dispatched immediately for operations, said the State Minister.

Schools closed

Meanwhile, all schools in the Northern Province will be closed tomorrow (03) and on Friday (04) due to the predicted adverse weather conditions.

Earlier, it was announced that all schools in the Eastern Province would remain closed from today till Friday (04).
