Suspect nabbed over selling newborns Featured

A suspect has been arrested by the Police Children and Women Bureau for engaging in a racket of signing agreements with expectant women to sell their newborns to third parties.

Speaking at a media briefing today (22), Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said that the 47 year old suspect, a resident of Matale, operated the racket from a location in Moratuwa and carried out operations via social media.

He added it is learnt that 30 newborns have been sold to third parties in this manner.

Commenting on the legal background pertaining to handing over children to third parties, DIG Ajith Rohana said that children can be placed in a third parties care through consent by a District Court, adding that according to the Adoption of Children’s Ordinance law children cannot be sold.

He noted that more such rackets are operated online and that police will nab them all.
