‘Govt. refutes tax fraud in sugar imports’ Featured

The Government today refuted charges levelled by the opposition claiming tax fraud amounting to billions had taken place, by granting tax concessions to a private company when importing sugar.

Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa speaking in Parliament today said the price of sugar has not decreased adding that tax fraud of Rs.10 billion has been committed in relation to sugar.

The Opposition Leader said accordingly the Samagi Jana Balawegaya during its Parliamentary group meeting decided to oppose the move.

In response State Minister of Co-operative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection Lasantha Alagiyawanna said an adjournment motion has been tabled pertaining to Gazette Notifications issued over the past few days adding that as the subject Minister he will provide a detailed explanation with facts.

Meanwhile an adjournment debate is currently underway in Parliament based on large scale tax fraud allegedly reported when importing sugar and coconut oil.
