Can't impose lockdown - Gammanpila

The government says Sri Lanka cannot be placed under lockdown despite the detection of the highly contagious UK COVID-19 variant in the country.Co-Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Udaya Gammanpila was speaking about this at the Cabinet briefing held earlier today (16).The minister pointed out that the city of Melbourne had entered its fourth lockdown after the detection of 16 Covid-19 cases.

Minister Gammanpila noted that a country heavily in debt such as Sri Lanka, lacks the economic strength to further go into a lockdown. "Even if we want to, it cannot be done," he said.

He said hundreds of thousands of people lost their jobs due to the 2 1/2 month long lockdown last year and added that the public has to face the challenge of learning to live with Covid-19.
