US 'disappointed' over GoSL backing away from cremation policy Featured

US Ambassador to Sri Lanka - Alaina B. Teplitz today (Feb. 18) expressed her disappointment to see the reaction of the Sri Lankan government with regard to the prevailing cremation policy of Covid-19 deaths.

“Disappointed to see that the Sri Lankan Government and Prime Minister are backing away from ending discriminatory cremation policy. People, including loved ones recently passed, deserve more respect for their rights from a democratic government," she has tweeted.

Last week, when Prime minister - Mahinda Rajapaksa said in parliament that 'cremations will be allowed' during a heated debate, the US ambassador as well as Pakistan PM - Imran Khan had commended the move.

However, in less than a day, the government had made a U-turn, stating that only an expert committee of experts would make the decision.
