Custom sources say this tyre company which is located in Ja-Ela and Ekala manufactures tyres for exporting.
According to the custom, since the company is a reputed one, the containers sent by the particular company had not been subjected to rigorous checkings by the customs officials at the port.
Using this opportunity, a group of people have exported 160 containers containing waste tea to Dubai in March and April last year. Each container is said to have contained 18 MT of waste tea worth Rs 3.5 million.
Custom sources said this shady smuggling deal has been carried out by producing forged documents pretending that the particular BOI company was exporting tyres.
Already, the customs have identified several persons who are responsible for this shady deal.
Meanwhile, Director General of Customs Maj. Gen. (retired) Vijitha Ravipriya said this stock of tea has been exported through the BOI.
He has further said separate inquiries are being conducted by the BOI and customs officials.
