Govt. allocates Rs 23,000m to purchase paddy

For the first time, the government has decided to maintain a paddy stock in order and has allocated Rs 23000 to purchase 300,000 MT of paddy, with the aim of protecting both the farmer and consumer.

According to Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage says Rs 16,000 million has been allocated to Pady Purchasing Board, which Rs 2000 allotted to the district Secretaries to purchase paddy. Another Rs 5000 million has been set apart to the Cooperative Societies.

As of now, the government has repaired 323 stores which have the capacity to store 322,000 MT. The repairing work has been carried out by the army.

Minister Aluthgamage said the aim of this move is to protect both the farmer and consumer from the clutches of the rice mafia.
