Sri Lanka to get 264000 vaccines under COVAX, says Sudarshini

SriLanka will receive the first batch of COVID vaccines under the COVAX facility on March 07.Under the first batch, Sri Lanka wouldget 264,000 doses, said Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle, the state minister of Primary Healthcare, Epidemics and COVID Disease Control.

The announcement comes as Sri Lanka hasplanned to vaccinate 14 million people out of the 22 million total population.

under the COVAX facility, Sri Lanka isexpected to get 8 million doses which is sufficient for 4 million people whichis about 20 per cent of the country’s population.

The island nation has so far received100,000 doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine manufactured in the neighboringIndia which donated half of the doses while Sri Lanka purchased the balance fromIndia’s Serum Institute.

Oxford-AstraZeneca is the only vaccine approved by the regulatory bodyin Sri Lanka.
