No polygamy for Muslims in Sri Lanka

The cabinet is reported to have given approval to amend the Muslim Marriage laws in order to prevent the forcible marriages of girls below the age of 18 years.

At the same time, the Cabinet has closed the doors for polygamy that prevailed under the Muslim Marriage laws.

Also, the cabinet has given approval to exercise the country's general law in respect of divorcing Muslim women instead of the Kathi courts.

Under the exiting laws, there was no age limit for Muslim girls to be wedded and a girl could be wedded on the consent of father, father's siblings and a brother.

Those draconian state of the affairs will be abolished along with the new amendments submitted by the Justice Minister Ali Sabri.
