Inaugural meeting of Uvindu Wijeweera today Featured

The inaugural public meeting of the "Second Generation" led by Uvindu Wijeweera, the son of former JVP leader Rohana Wijeweera, started at 10.00am today (04) at the National Library Auditorium.

He is due to make his maiden public address today.

The event is to mark 50 years since the 1971 armed struggle led by Rohana Wijeweera.

Uvindu, who backed president Gotabaya Rajapaksa during the 2019 Presidential  election, was prepared to contest last year's General election under the ticket of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramunu (SLPP).

However, he was denied the opportunity by the SLPP national organiser - Basil Rajapaksa after Wimal Weerawansa and Prasanna Ranatunga both opposed Uvindu joining the fray from the Colombo and Gampaha districts respectively.

However, Uvindu founded the "Second Generation" movement afterwards.

Although it is said that the movement would not be contesting the upcoming PC polls as Wijeweela rejected the PC election system,  political analysts point out that today's event is  more of groundwork to fortify public support at upcoming elections.
