Protest over assaulting & detaining journalist

A protest was held against police over assaulting on freelance journalist Malika Abeykoon and denial of medical treatment.The protest was held in front of the Maradana Police station where Abeykoon is being detained since yesterday, even without medical treatment.

Abeykoon was assaulted as he was reporting on a protest march launched by the health trade unions over 11 demands.

Police did not allow trade union activists and a lawyer to visit Abeykoon.

The protestors accuse that the government is violating the democratic rights and marching toward an autocratic rule.
