Their suspicions have become more intense due to the views expressed by some of the speakers at Gotabhaya’s ‘Viyath Maga’ conference recently, say the sources.
Gotabhaya as well as many top military officers and lower ranks are under probe in connection with killings committed by certain members of the military for political and personal revenge during the previous regime.
The CID has already gathered evidence that could help prove the accusations before courts of law.
Provoking armed forces members
The intelligence has become watchful following information about attempts to provoke members of the three armed forces into act against the government.
At the ‘Viyath Maga’ conference, provocative remarks against the government were made especially by retired Maj. Gen. Kamal Gunaratne.
There are accusations against the Rajapaksas that after having aided Bodu Bala Sena, Thowheed Jamath and groups to create communal clashes, they are now using Viyath Maga, Yuthukama etc. for the same purpose.
Rathana Thera’s defence of wrongdoers
Meanwhile, internal trouble is brewing in the government after JHU MP Athuraliye Rathana Thera, a UNP national list appointee, has defended members of the military who stand accused of having got involved in crime outside their military responsibilities, say UNP sources.
The UNP says it is a serious matter that he has said that the Army commander should be informed in advance when arresting a member of the Army accused of a crime.
This is especially so in the absence of a requirement for the speaker’s permission to arrest an MP over wrongdoing, and Rathana Thera’s call is intended to protect criminals by giving a special privilege to armed forces members, say legal experts.
He is also accused of having given reasons for anti-government racist forces to campaign for their objectives.
