Cabinet approves insurance scheme for migrant SL employees

The Cabinet of Ministers had yesterday (17) approved a proposal to introduce an appropriate insurance scheme for Sri Lankans employed overseas.

The proposal was made by Minister of Labour Nimal Siripala De Silva.

The Foreign Employment Bureau has provided an Overseas Labour Insurance Coverage for Sri Lankan employees.

Under this, they are paid insurances subject to a maximum of Rs. 600,000 in case of an employee’s death and Rs. 400,000 in case of total disability.

However, the government has decided that these employees have no coverage for varieties of industrial and donation accidents in the workplace, access to medical care for mental and health problems due to various illnesses and harassment by employers and job losses due to Covid.

Considering these factors, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved to introduce an appropriate insurance scheme.
