Diplomatic offensive to rescue ship with Lankan crew Featured

Sri Lanka’s government has joined forces with other parties in a diplomatic offensive to rescue the ship with eight Sri Lankan crew members taken hostage by Somali pirates two days ago.

The Somali government, Society of Maritime Industries in the UK, EU, NATO and CMS of Bahrain are mediating on behalf of them.

The Sri Lankans being held are S.A. Nicholas of Jaffna, K.T.T.R. Sampath of Mathugama, D.M. Anuranga of Galle, K. Jayantha of Colombo, L.H.S. Shamendra of Matara, B.C. Perera of Gampola, K.A.Shanmugam of Matale and V.L. Indunil of Imaduwa.

The EU Naval Force that has got in touch with the ship’s captain via telephone has told BBC Sandeshaya that the pirates were demanding ransom to release the ship.

The ship, Aris 13, is being held at a port in the northern coast of Somalia.

This is the first merchant ship to be captured by Somali pirates since 2012.
