Prasanna Ranathunga blames Yahapalanaya for floods in Gampaha

In the usual game of putting the blame on the other party came to the spotlight on Tuesday when a key government minister blamed the previous Yahapalana regime led by the UNP for causing the recent floods in Gampaha.

Walking in the same footsteps of traditional politicians, Minister Prasanna Ranathunga said floods in Gampaha "is a result of the short-sighted policies of the previous Yahapalana government.

"Responding to a question raised by the media, Ranathunga said three reasons have been identified for causing the floods in Gamapaha.

"One reason is the Yahapalana government's decision to change the original plan of constructing the central expressway.""The Central Expressway was to be constructed on an elevated platform as per the plan drawn up before 2015. However, the former government reclaimed lands and built the road on lands without erecting the road on overhead pillars."

"Besides, they did not clear any of the water drainage systems and also failed to renovate water retention systems near lakes, rivers and streams in the Gampaha district during former regime."“We are now formulating a system to rehabilitate all water retention systems by negotiating with the District Secretary," he said.
