Govt. seeks US $ 40 million initial claim from X-Press Pearl

Sri Lanka has asked the operators of the X-Press Pearl ship to pay an interim claim of US $ 40 million as the cost incurred to douse the fire on board the ship.

According to the government's sources, the  attorney general has sent the claim to lawyers representing X-Press Feeders, the ship’s operating company.

The interim claim seeks compensation for expenses from May 20, when the ship caught fire, through June 1.

The full assessment on the damages caused and expenses incurred are still being prepared, the sources said.

The fire broke out while the Singapore-flagged MV X-Press Pearl was anchored about 9.5 nautical miles (18 kilometers) northwest of the capital, Colombo, and waiting to enter the country's main port.
