Speaking to media in Matara, the State Minister said however there is a decrease in the number of daily COVID-19 infections.
She stated the third wave emerged from the B.1.1.7 coronavirus variant, first detected in the UK, which is highly transmissible, and led to many complications and fatalities.
She added a majority of the fatalities were reported two to three weeks after contracting the virus, while a minority succumbed within 10 days.
State Minister Fernandopulle noted the coronavirus can mutate in any instance, adding that vaccines are effective against the B.1.1.7 variant at present.
The State Minister stressed however the failure to contain the spread of the virus may lead to more variants emerging, adding that the effectiveness of vaccines against new strains can only be determined in future.
