In a letter addressed to President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa before retiring from his post, Anusha Pelpita has said that Weerawansa has no financial discipline and therefore he is unable to follow the illegal orders given to him by the minister.
Noting that he had therefore decided not to continue in the public administration service, Mr. Pelpita has requested to be allowed to retire.
The letter has further noted that he had informed the minister that the Mineral Sand Project as well as the fertilizer project utilizing the phosphate deposit cannot be done under the prevalent laws.
This has led to a clash between Mr. Pelpita and minister Wimal.
Anusha Pelpita, a senior official in the Public Administration Service, was convicted by the High Court along with the then Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga for misappropriating state funds by distributing ‘Sil’ cloth to temples islandwide at a cost of Rs. 600 million belonging to the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission during the 2015 Presidential Election.
On September 07, 2017, the Colombo High Court sentenced Weeratunga and Pelpita to three years’ imprisonment with hard labour and fined them Rs. 2 million each.
However, on Nov. 19, 2020, the Court of Appeal yesterday acquitted both of them from all charges and released them.
