Country could face another lockdown?

Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana stated that persons who do not maintain social distancing in public places while travel restrictions are relaxed, could face arrest from today (22).

Speaking during a TV programme, the senior DIG stated that this decision was taken after lack of social distancing was observed in many places since yesterday.

Long queues at pawning centresMeanwhile, long queues were seen at pawning centres since travel restrictions were relaxed since last morning.

This was seen not only in Colombo suburbs but in many areas of the country.

Many, including daily wage earners have been unable to secure a steady stream of income with islandwide travel restrictions placed for over a month.

A 2-month closure possible?

Senior DIG Ajith Rohana also stated that if the country attempts to cover up the missed work disregarding the prevailing situation, the country could face another lockdown running for a few months in two weeks' time.

Therefore, it is up to the people to decide whether to work in moderation and be patient until the end of this year or whether the country would be closed again in two weeks, he said.

He also said that during the last period of travel restrictions, many non-essential employees had been summoned to work by heads of institutions by sending essential service letters. The police spokesman emphasised that this situation should not occur again.
