Cabraal to brief Parliament today on economic challenges

State Minister of  Money and Capital Market Ajith Nivad Cabraal is to make a statement today in Parliament on the economic challenges faced by the country and the steps being taken to address them.
His statement comes as the Central Bank's latest statistics show that the inflation has increased to 6.1 per cent in May from 5.5 per cent in April.
Sources say Cabraal briefed the cabinet of ministers about the economic challenges faced by the country on Monday and asked for responses to overcome the challenges and also to spur economic growth.
Sources say the government is likely to continue with or even further tighten the import restrictions as a measure of saving foreign currency reserves and reducing trade deficit.
